Summer is here and with it comes the virtual Summer Reading Challenge 2020. Wherever you might be lazing in the sunshine, there will be books from this year’s selection that your kids will love.

East Sussex Library Services are working with The Reading Agency again to promote the Summer Reading Challenge. Each year the Summer Reading Challenge motivates 700,000 children across the country to keep reading. Reading helps build their skills and confidence and can prevent children’s reading dipping slightly over the school holidays. This year’s theme is ‘The Silly Squad -Lets get Silly!’ a celebration of funny books, happiness and laughter. It also features original artwork from children’s author and illustrator Laura Ellen Anderson.

The summer holidays is a great time for families to share and talk about books and celebrate reading together. The Summer Reading Challenge encourages your child to read six (or more) books of their choice during the summer holidays with collectable rewards, plus a certificate for every child who completes the challenge.

Due to Covid-19 things are a little different this year with all resources available digitally. The Summer Reading Challenge website includes video content, games, quizzes and interactive activities. Parents can also find out all about the Summer reading Challenge, its benefits and how to take part at the Home Zone.

You can still access ebooks, audiobooks and comics through the East Sussex eLibrary . There is a whole section devoted to Silly Squad recommendations. These are also available in the five libraries currently open across East Sussex.

The East Sussex Library and Information Service will be posting recommendations on their Facebook page of the best and silliest books to read and will let you know of any special events that The Reading Agency are holding over the summer holidays.
