Spring has sprung in East Sussex and the clocks have now gone forward, giving us even more daylight. Aren’t we all relieved!? No matter how cosy the winter is, it does feel long and dark towards the end. To celebrate, we’ve pulled together a list of 10 things to do this spring…
-
Get outside!
This is an obvious one, but as the days get longer, it feels easier to spend more time outside. It should be light now before and after work and school, making the temptation of the sofa less appealing. There are loads of benefits to being outside, and so many places to visit in East Sussex. Hop on the bus for just 50p!
2. Visit some baby animals
Spring=baby animals! There are lots of local places offering lambing events. They get super busy, so check if you need to book a slot. You can even opt to bottle-feed the orphaned lambs. If you’re on a budget, you can also watch them leaping around whilst walking or driving through the county. It is such a joyful sight and is a real symbol of spring.
It’s also tadpole season, and watching frogspawn turn into tadpoles and little frogs is fascinating!
3. Declutter
Spring is about new beginnings and is a perfect time to declutter or start something new that you’ve been putting off. Stacey Solomon’s ‘Sort Your Life Out’ is an inspiring place to start, where she suggests people make ‘recycle’, ‘donate’ and ‘sell’ piles to help get started. It’s very therapeutic, especially knowing that your unwanted items are being treasured by someone else.
4. Go flower picking
Having cut flowers in the house is so cheerful. You can pick daffodils up in supermarkets for 50p a bunch and tulips for a couple of pounds. Buy a few bunches and have a flower-arranging session. Or if you’re feeling wholesome, book a pick-your-own event at a local PYO farm. If you can grow your own- great! Lots of seeds can still be planted for this year to enjoy through the summer
5. Plan your Easter activities
If you’ve been to a supermarket recently, you’ll see that Easter is well and truly on the way. Easter activities can get quickly booked up and eggs sell out! Book your egg hunt now and stock up on choccies before the school holiday rush. Maybe you want to have a go at homemade Easter gifts this year? Now’s the time to start.
6. Eat what’s in season
Eating seasonally means your food should be extra tasty and better value for money. April’s seasonal food includes rhubarb, asparagus, broccoli, new potatoes, parsnips, kale, artichoke, rocket and the perfectly named spring greens! You can even forage wild garlic and nettles to add to your dishes. Follow the smell of the garlic…have you got any good spots for these? Just watch out for any that may have been weed on!
7. Take a walk through the bluebells
Late March onwards marks the start of bluebell walks. There are several of these in East Sussex and the little purple-blue flowers are sure to brighten any day with their intoxicating scent. Please tag us in your pictures.
8. Make a spring door wreath
Wreaths are for life, not just for Christmas. Why should they stick to festive evergreens!? Making your own wreath is an easy and mindful craft that can be done by all. Anything from a paper plate to woven twigs can be used to create a round shape. You can then add seasonal flowers, leaves, twigs, moss and eggshells. If you want it to last, choose artificial versions of these and add on little animal toys and Easter decorations. Finish with a pastel ribbon and hang it on your door.
9 .Go to the seaside
A nostalgic trip for many, and we are lucky enough to have a bucketful of options in East Sussex. From the sandy dunes of Camber to the rock pools of Birling Gap. Head to the beach with a picnic and a flask of tea and enjoy watching the waves, reading a book, flying a kite or collecting treasures. But please be mindful of the cliffs (which can and do crumble) and the changing tides.
10. Bake a festive treat
Think hot cross buns, simnel cake, bunny biscuits, easter nests… There’s plenty to bake in the run-up to Easter to get you feeling festive. YUM!
