This March East Sussex Libraries are celebrating Women’s History Month (WHM) with special International Women’s Day themed storytimes. Help your little one’s learn about some of the incredible achievements of real-life women from around the globe.

How else can you support WHM in our libraries?

Unfortunately, Period Poverty affects 1 in 7 girls and women in the UK with many missing work and school because they cannot afford period products. Periodbank at East Sussex libraries is helping to tackle period poverty by providing donated period and hygiene products to anyone who needs them. We need your help to tackle period poverty, and are asking for donations of tampons, pads, and reusable period products at all our libraries.

Back to books…

This month our librarian Nicola has selected some speculative feminism, a history of the roots of misogyny and a children’s introduction to women’s suffrage to mark Women’s History Month.

Book cover of I Belong HereI belong Here: A Journey Along the Backbone of Britain by Anita Sethi

Anita Sethi was on a journey through northern England when she became the victim of a race hate crime. After the event Anita experienced panic attacks and anxiety. A crushing sense of claustrophobia made her long for wide open spaces; the Pennines – the ‘backbone of Britain’ – called to Anita with a magnetic force.

Although a racist had told her to leave, she was intent on travelling freely and without fear. Anita’s journey through the landscapes of the North is one of reclamation, a way of saying that she belongs in the UK as a brown woman, as much as a white man does. Her journey transforms what began as an ugly experience of hate into one offering hope and finding beauty after brutality. Every footstep is an act of persistence. Every word written against the rising tide of hate speech is an act of resistance.
