Mencap is busting myths this Learning Disability Week (19-25 June), ‘to celebrate the achievements of people with learning disabilities and to challenge the misconceptions that often surround them. This year, the focus is on busting myths about life with a learning disability, highlighting the incredible things people achieve and emphasising that individuals are so much more than their learning disability.’

Actress Sarah Gordy, who you may have seen in the BBC series ‘Ralph and Katie’, is a part of the Involvement Matters Team (IMT). She is also a Celebrity Ambassador for Mencap and one of the myth busters.

IMT members will celebrate Learning Disability week by featuring in their own campaign. Focusing on the theme of celebrating the achievements and success of people with a learning disability, they will share their ‘IMT Spotlight’ profiles. These will be featured on the Learning Disability Partnership Board – East Sussex Facebook page. They will also appear across East Sussex County Council’s (ESCC) social media.  Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

‘There’s more to me than a Learning Disability!’

Back in 2017, IMT also started a campaign called ‘There’s more to me than a Learning Disability!’ which also links closely to the values of Learning Disability week. The campaign raises awareness that having a learning disability is part of who IMT are, but not the only thing.

In Sarah Gordy’s campaign film, she says, “We need people not to judge us, just see us!”

How can I learn more?
