Powell and Pressburger are largely known for their distinctive, visually stunning, contribution to British cinema of the nineteen-forties. This session will focus on their 1948 film ‘The Red Shoes,’ and its place in their body of work. We will explore the film’s symbolism, storytelling and cinematography, as well as its provocative representation of gender, desire, and creative self-expression, We will also investigate the relationship between Han’s Christian Andersen’s original version of ‘The Red Shoes’ (1845) and Powell and Pressburger’ s adaptation.
