The Healthy Ageing through Innovation in Rural Europe (HAIRE) project aims to build more age-friendly communities by empowering older people. The project enables older people to define the support they need, allows them to participate in the design of services, and encourages the development of solutions to meet local needs.
In order to accomplish such project aspirations, sixteen volunteers have been recruited to the team and trained to undertake guided conversations. As a result, the volunteers conducted 76 Interviews with over 200 hours worth of conversations with older people in Rye, Robertsbridge, and surrounding villages, which revealed a vast amount about what it is like growing older in our local communities.
Four major themes have emerged that impact older people’s lives:
1. life changes and transitions,
2. loneliness and isolation,
3. staying active and
4. access to information and resources.
The next step is to further explore these themes with the help of local people aged 60 or over to identify solutions and actions to meet local needs. If any of this piqued your interest or know anyone who would like to take part, there are a number of upcoming events where you will have the chance to explore each theme individually! Our website www.rva.uk.com/events has the registration form for each event or you may choose to sign up by telephone.
