Arts Society East Sussex – March Illustrated Lecture

Prunella Clough and the Transfiguration of the Commonplace.  Presented by Colin Pink.

Prunella Clough is an important figure in twentieth century art. She was a constant presence in the British art scene from the 1940s through to the 1990s. She never ceased developing new approaches to her art, evolving from her early neo-Romantic style to her own type of postmodernist painting.
We’ll look at her early social realist work depicting fishermen, truck drivers and factory workers, her transition to a form of abstract landscape painting under the influence of Nicola de Stael and Abstract Expressionism and her use of overlooked everyday objects, such as plastic bags, as source material for art.
A constant in all her work is her curiosity about the overlooked, things that are not normally regarded as worthy of attention, but which she utilises as sources in her art. Clough invent new ways of working in order to transfigure the commonplace and widen the vocabulary of art.
Colin Pink has a BA in Philosophy and Politics from the University of Southampton and a MA in the History of Art from Birkbeck, University of London. He specialises in the interrelationship between the history of ideas and the history of art and has lectured on aspects of modern art at a wide range of cultural organisations: Putney School of Art and Design; the Temenos Academy; APT Studios; Mascalls Gallery; the Museum of Futures, Surbiton; the Jerwood Gallery, Hastings and the De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea. He also curates exhibitions and has published two books of poetry: Acrobats of Sound, 2016 and The Ventriloquist Dummy’s Lament, 2019.  Further details of this and future lectures can be found on our website.
