Yellowface by Rebecca F. KuangYellowface by Rebecca F. Kuang

A satire about publishing, cultural appropriation and how far you would go if the chance of success came along. Fascinating, prickly but in the end a very satisfying read. An anti-heroine who steals the identity and writing of a much-loved author when she is the only witness to the author’s demise.

Secrets of the Snakestone by Piu DasGuptaSecrets of the Snakestone by Piu DasGupta

For younger children, I would highly recommend Piu DasGupta’s The Secrets of the Snakestone. Set in Belle-Epoque Paris, it’s a historical novel that pits a young servant girl, Zelie, against a dangerous and power-hungry secret society when she has to unravel the mystery behind a family jewel that is rumoured to hold magical properties.

Midnight Treasure by Piers TordayMidnight Treasure by Piers Torday

I must also mention Piers Torday. All his novels are captivating, but Midnight Treasure is really spectacular. A fantastical world where humans are underlings and Vampirs and Werwolves live in uneasy alliance. Young werwolf Tibor lives with his guardian, a powerful Vampir. He and his friend Roza are dispatched on a quest to find the Midnight Treasure. Powerfully magical but hunted by others it becomes a race against time and enemies who will trick and lie to get there before him. It’s a fantastic read with lots of laugh out loud moments amongst the tense cliff-hangers.
