Earth Day 2025 marks the 55th anniversary of the global environmental movement, with the theme “Our Power, Our Planet.” This year, the focus is on accelerating the transition to renewable energy sources—such as solar, wind, hydroelectric, tidal, and geothermal – to triple global clean electricity generation by 2030. The goal is to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, mitigate climate change, and promote a sustainable, equitable future for all.
Here are some simple things you can do to support Earth Day 2025 and reduce your reliance on fossil fuels – every small change helps create a cleaner, more sustainable future:
Travel sustainably
If you can, choose to walk, ride or use public transport for short journeys, rather than jumping in the car.
You can travel by bus in East Sussex for as little as £1 for short hop trips, £2 for medium length rides and a maximum of £3 for longer journeys. In areas with limited or no public transport Flexibus, our on-demand ride share service, can connect you with your local area and the wider public transport network.
Conserve energy at home
Turn off lights and unplug devices when you aren’t using them. Switch to LED bulbs and energy-efficient appliances.
Use renewable energy
Choose a green energy plan from your utility provider or if you’re able to, have solar panels installed on your home.
Buy local and buy sustainable
Shop locally to cut down on transport emissions and avoid single-use plastics made from fossil fuels, opt for reusable items instead.
Inspired to take action? Why not make an Earth Day pledge and commit to doing something that supports renewable energy or environmental sustainability? Share your pledge on social media using the hashtag #EarthActionDay to inspire others.
East Sussex County Council’s renewable energy projects
As a council we have now installed solar panels on 26 council buildings, supported over 550 households to install solar photovoltaic (PV) panels at home through the Sussex Solar Together programme, replaced gas boilers with heat pumps in schools and other council buildings and installed low energy lighting.
