Every year, at the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, we commemorate the armistice that brought an end to the First World War with a two-minute silence.

Services are also held on Remembrance Sunday, which takes place on the second Sunday in November. These services remember the service and sacrifice of all those who have defended our freedoms and protected our way of life.

Remembrance services and events will be taking place across East Sussex this month.

Eastbourne

Annual Concert of Remembrance, 3 November

An annual concert with the Eastbourne Silver Band will take place at Our Lady of Ransom Church in Grange Road on Sunday, 3 November at 2.30pm.

Remembrance Sunday Service, 10 November

A remembrance service with military and civic parades will be held to commemorate the contribution of British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women during times of conflict.

A military parade will form along Cornfield Road from 10.25am. The service will begin at the War Memorial at 10.40am. A two-minute silence will be held at 11am, followed by wreath laying.

Armistice Day, 11 November

A service will be held at 10.45am at the War Memorial Houses in Victoria Drive, attended by the Mayor of Eastbourne.

Willingdon

Remembrance Sunday Parade and Service, 10 November

A parade will take place at 10.15am followed by a service at St Mary the Virgin Church, Willingdon at 10.45am.

Ruthless Memorial Service, Butts Brow, 10 November

A service will be held at 3pm at the Ruthless Memorial to honour the crew who lost their lives when the World War II USAAF Liberator bomber crashed into the Downs above Willingdon in 1944.

Lewes

Remembrance Parade and Service, 10 November

Lewes Town Council are holding a Remembrance parade and service together with the Royal British Legion on 10 November.

The parade will start at the top of Lewes High Street (near the Westgate St carpark) at approximately 2.30pm and march to the War Memorial for wreath laying. A church service at St Michael’s Church will follow at 3pm.

Armistice Day, 11 November

A short moment of silence will also be held at the War Memorial in Lewes at 11am on 11 November to mark Armistice Day.

Peacehaven

Remembrance Day Parade and Service, 10 November

A service of remembrance and wreath laying will be held at Peacehaven & Telscombe War Memorial, following the Remembrance Day parade.

The parade will form up near The Joff on Roderick Avenue at 10.15am and will move off at 10.30am.

Crowborough

Remembrance Sunday Parade, 10 November

A service will take place at the War Memorial on Chapel Green at 11am.

The remembrance parade will assemble in the lower car park at Croft Road car park at 10:15am. It will march to Chapel Green for the traditional wreath-laying ceremony at 11am. A service of remembrance will follow at All Saints Church.

Armistice Day, 11 November

People are invited to pay their respects at the War Memorial at Chapel Green at 10.30am.

Maroons will be fired at 11 o’clock to signify the start of the two-minute silence.

Seaford

Remembrance Service, 10 November

Everyone is welcome to attend the Remembrance Service at the War Memorial on Sutton Road, starting at 10.30am with wreath laying. The two-minute silence will be marked at 11am.

Following the service, the parade will march to St Leonard’s Church for a service starting at 11.30am.

Commonwealth Service of Remembrance, 12 November

The Commonwealth Service of Remembrance will be held at the Seaford Cemetery on Alfriston Road on Tuesday, 12 November at 10.45am.

Newhaven

Remembrance Service and Parade, 10 November

A Remembrance Service will be held at St. Michael’s Church in Newhaven at 9.15am.

Following the service, the remembrance parade will march to Memorial Green for an Act of Remembrance starting at 10:45am.

Hailsham

Remembrance Service, 10 November

A Remembrance Sunday Morning Service will take place at Hailsham Parish Church on Sunday morning at 9.30am.

After the service, there will be a parade to the War Memorial followed by a wreath-laying service and the playing of the Last Post. Two minutes silence will be observed at 11am.
