What is the High Weald?
The High Weald is an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB) that stretches across East Sussex, West Sussex, Kent, and Surrey. It’s one of England’s most ancient landscapes, characterised by its rolling hills, ancient woodlands, small farms, and historic villages. For those in East Sussex, the High Weald offers a chance to explore some of the most picturesque and historically rich areas right on your doorstep.
Why walk in the High Weald?
The High Weald is one of the most beautiful and ecologically rich areas in the country. As a National Landscape, it offers a unique glimpse into England’s past, with its patchwork of woodlands, fields, and winding lanes that have remained largely unchanged for centuries.
Whether you’re keen to spot some local wildlife, delve into the area’s rich history, or simply enjoy a peaceful walk in nature, there’s a walk for you. With routes ranging from 1 to 13 miles, the festival caters to all ages and abilities — making it a fantastic family-friendly event or a great solo escape.

The Accessible Countryside for Everyone project details routes across Sussex for those with restricted mobility, including wheelchair and pushchair users.
