I say library and you think books, right? Well yes, you’re right but did you know your local library has so much more to offer? It’s the perfect place to visit throughout the colder months and there is plenty to keep the whole family occupied. Here are 3 fool-proof reasons to visit the library this winter…
Events for all ages
Whether you’re looking for activities to entertain the children or you’d like to add more social activities to your calendar, the library hosts events throughout the year. Every week, libraries run the iconic rhyme and story time, and during school holidays, there are plenty of free events for children including stories, treasure hunts, and craft sessions. As well as a homework club and a coding club!
Library events are not just for the little ones. There are also plenty of events for adults to get involved with, including some exciting author talks! From developing your skills and learning new things to sessions on family history, games, and crafts, the library offers a wide range of events to get involved in. Bring a friend or perhaps make a new one! Filter the upcoming events by your local library, category, and month to find something that works for you.
Perfect place to work and study
Sure, working and studying at home can be good (fluffy slippers, anyone?) but sometimes you need a change of head space with fewer distractions. At your local library, you can pre-book space to work and make use of the free WiFi, or reserve one of the library desktop computers. There is also access to printers and scanners and, of course, the original Google (books) at your disposal!
You can also access subscription services for free via the library computers, including:
- Ancestry
- Find My Past
- Theory Test Pro
- Encyclopaedia Britannica
- And many more!
Can’t make it? Visit virtually!
Whether you’re on the go or plan to stay inside, there’s no need to miss out. You can access the library 24/7 from the comfort of your home, commute or while you’re out and about! Through the e-library you have access to:
- Audiobooks
- E-books and e-comics
- Current e-newspapers and e-magazines
- Wellbeing resources
- The Online Reference Library (for databases, dictionaries and courses)
If you’re on a device there are a number of apps to choose from to access the e-content, such as the Libby app and the Pressreader app.
Bonus reason: have a day out at the library without spending a penny!
Sometimes we want to get out of the house and have a change of scenery, but we don’t want to spend money. We know that going to a coffee shop never results in just a coffee and sometimes we don’t fancy braving the weather on a walk especially when it’s cold and wet. Admittedly, the library is free all year round, but the winter gets expensive and there’s less access to the great outdoors so visiting in winter just makes sense.
Fancy a read but not sure where to start?
Every month the YES team share Henry the Librarian’s favourite reads for the month. From top audio to top kid’s book, there is something for everyone. If you missed it, check out ‘Get in our Good Books’ for December!
