Who Are We and What Do We Do?
Music for the Memory is based around the principles of music therapy and singing. The structured group sessions use music to encourage communication and participation and include opportunities to talk to other people. Each session includes a range of activities including a vocal warm-up and singing a variety of familiar and new songs. Newcomers are asked to attend for a minimum of three sessions to give themselves time to become familiar with what goes on before deciding whether it is the right activity for them.
Who Can Come to Music for the Memory?
Music for the Memory is for people with dementia who can attend alone or with a carer. It is a service for people with dementia and therefore is not intended for carers to attend alone. Music for the Memory is not suitable for anyone to attend on their own if they have personal care needs or require a secure environment.
The group attract between 20-30 local people and the session lasts 1½ – 2 hrs and includes a refreshment break which offers the opportunity to socialise, share and discuss experiences and difficulties and will thus provide support to carers as well as the cared for person.
