The East Sussex Careers Hub – set up to improve careers guidance for secondary school students – is celebrating its first birthday and more and more businesses are joining the initiative.
Among the many companies that are involved is Eastbourne-based electrical contractor, G M Monk.
The firm has been working with Hailsham Community College, other schools and local firms to inspire the next generation of talent.
Filling the skills gap
From engaging employers at special business breakfasts to developing a scheme where all companies can show their support with a window sticker, GM Monk is not afraid to try different methods to help fill the skills gap in its industry sector.
GM Monk Managing Director, Scott Monk says his company is totally committed to supporting students and helping schools with their curriculum planning.
“You can either sit on the sidelines worrying about the lack of young people coming into your industry,” said Scott. “Or you can do something about it. We chose the latter.
“Supported by East Sussex County Council, we’ve been involved in the Open Doors project, Industry Champion scheme, Apprenticeship Roadshows and career events, and have offered students interview practice.
“We are the Enterprise Adviser for Hailsham Community College and really proud that the college now has links with over 150 local employers. We’ve put in a lot of effort but it’s been hugely rewarding.”
And G M Monk isn’t planning to slow down its career support work anytime soon.
“We’re aiming to develop a mentoring programme and hope to start it later this year,” said Scott. “We’re also developing careers in the curriculum with career champions in each college department. Alongside this, we’ve committed to provide more training for teaching staff on careers provision.
“I would urge fellow employers in East Sussex to contact the Careers Hub and get involved. It doesn’t have to take up a huge amount of your time. But it could make a big difference to young people and your industry in the future,” added Scott.
